Ag. Nikolaos is a small fishing village near Spoa, which has some small beaches: the largest is known as Agios Nikolaos beach.
Agios Nikolaos is best known as a tiny port of Spoa on the east coast of Karpathos island, but this small settlement is a charming seaside resort also. The beach is called on maps as ‘Ag.Nikolaos Beach (Spoa) or Παραλία Άγιος Νικόλαος – Σπόα in Greek’, and it’s not difficult to find in the village due its location. The largest part of Agios Nikolaos beach is situated directly in front of the houses of the villages, just follow the pedestrian road from the port.
Agios Nikolaos beach (Spoa) has basic services such as a few parasols and sunbeds for rent. Behind the beach there are the taverns and apartments of the village, the best restaurants here are ‘To Votsalo Taverna’ and ‘Porto Bello’ in the port.
Despite its central location the beach is quite calm, because it is visited by the local guests primarily. The seabed is shallow and the sea is often calm here without waves. The western winds are not significant due to the protection of the surrounding mountains.
The seabed is characterized by coarse sand and pebbles, but in the water there are some stones which should be paid attention. It’s worth to know that Agios Nikolaos beach of Spoa has two sections next to each other, separated by some rocks.
Important information that Karpathos island has two beaches with the name of ‘Agios Nikolaos’, but these are far from each other. The other beach is located next to Arkasa (Arcesin) village, on the southwest coast of Karpathos, while this village lies in the north on the east coast. Agios Nikolaos beach near Arkasa is characterized by golden sand and emerald coloured waters, and looks like quite different.
This is the reason why these beaches are called exactly as ‘Agios Nikolaos beach of Spoa’, and ‘Agios Nikolaos beach of Arkasa’.
