Kostas Iliakis memorial in Pigadia

The memorial of Kostas Iliakis is dedicated to the air force captain, who was tragically killed in action in 23rd May, 2006, close to Karpathos island.

Captain Kostas Iliakis was a Hellenic Air Force pilot, who takes off from Souda, one of the airports of Crete. The purpose of takeoff was an expulsion of a Turkish fighter jet from Greek airspace, which violated the air borders of Greece.

When the Turkish jet fighter entered into Greek airspace without any permisson, Kostas Iliakis tried to catch the invader. The Turkish fighter pilot made a dangerous maneuver and took his plane to dangerous proximity, resulting a collision of the fighter jets. The pilot of the Turkish Air Force ejected successfully, but Kostas could not jump, and he lost his life in defense of his homeland. Unfortunately the heroic Greek pilot was never found. After the incident, the situation was extremely tense between Turkey and Greece, and several political consultations took place.
