Aperi

Aperi is a traditional picturesque mountain village in Karpathos, which was the capital of the island many years ago.

Aperi is located just a few kilometres north from Pigadia, and the village has very easy access due to the proximity of main road.  The village lies on the hills of the surrounding mountains, at an altitude 350 metres. Aperi was founded in the middle ages, when the inhabitants were looking for a safer place from pirate attacks. The residents of the village are very proud of that Aperi was the island's capital until 1892, and the village played a major role for centuries. The first high school in Karpathos was founded here in 1939.

Aperi village is one of the largest villages of Karpathos island with approx. 400 inhabitants. There are several colorful and beautifully renovated houses in the village, mostly in the hands of Greek immigrants who came back a few years ago from the USA. Aperi has an important religious role, because the village is today the seat of the Archbishop of Karpathos and Kasos. On the heights of the area you can see many chapels and orthodox churces with whitewashed walls and blue or red domes, these can be also visited.

There are several hiking trails in the area, the visitors of Aperi can walk around the narrow streets, climb up higher places, or just sit down and enjoy the magical scenery of the village. The streets and the gardens of Aperi are filled with lemon trees, plane trees, bougainvilleas, geraniums, and many other beautiful flowers and plants. In the center of Aperi you can find a large stone bridge also, which spans a small valley. This valley has important role in colder seasons, when it leads the precipitation from the surrounding mountains.

In the center of Aperi you can find some free parking lots, but watch out for parking on the narrow road. One of the best parking lots are next to the center of Archbishop. On the eastern side of the village there is a football stadium and next to it an athletic field, which are used by students and football teams.

The closest beach to Aperi village is the beautiful Achata beach, which can be accessed with a few minutes driving. There are some other interesting villages in the mountains near to Aperi, which are definitely worth a visit. These are Volada, Othos and Pyles villages, which are also listed among the most beautiful settlements on the islands!
