Where to find the most beautiful church of Olymbos in Karpathos Island
The church is known as Ιερός Ναός Κοίμησης Θεοτόκου in Greek, and it has very easy access in Olymbos. You can find this amazing church at the end of the main pedestrian street, where visitors arrive to the top of Olymbos. When you visit the village, just walk through the main street, while you reach the church of Olymbos.
The Church of Assumption of Virgin Mary was built hundreds of years ago in Olymbos, the oldest walls date from the Byzantine periods. In front of the building there is a beautiful bell tower and a tiny churchyard with flowers and marble ormanents, and make more beautiful this place.
The interior of the church is unique
In the garden of the church there can be find the sculpture of Manolis Papamanolis (1919-1943), a talented Greek painter, who was born in Olymbos, and died in the prison as a member of the Greek resistance. Inside the walls of the church there are many frescoes which are dated from the Byzantian times.
These old paintings represents some interesting biblical scenes, and one of the most interesting thing about the paintings, that some of these Byzantian artworks were emerged from under the newer paintings!
The church of Olymbos hosts also several gold plated relics, sacred icons and chandaliers.
