In Karpathos Menetes (Μενετες )is one of the important mountain villages, which is characterized by traditional houses, flowered balconies and narrow streets. The location the village is also beautiful, so it’s a great place on the island with some important sights of the area.
Menetes village is situated about 8 kilometers southwest from Pigadia, which means its access is quick and quite easy from the capital of Karpathos. This is one of the nearest villages to the capital of Karpathos, so you we have to drive just a few minutes on the winding roads.

The houses were built amphiteatrically on the high cliffs at an altitude of 280 meters, most of the buildings are facing to the north. The population of Menetes (you can find the village on maps as Μενετες) is 416 according to census of 2011.

Due to it special location Menetes village offers for visitors spectacular views to almost every directions, especially to the area of Pigadia. We can see the houses of Karpathos town, the high mountains of the north, and the beautiful valley from above.

What to see in Menetes, guide with photos
The main road bisects the village, and a free parking lot is situated next to the road, directly in the center. The other streets of the village are primarily narrow alleys for pedestrian traffic, and just a few can be accessed by car.
When you discover Menetes, you will see how interesting and nice village was built in the mountains. Next to the buildings there grow several pines, bougainvilleas and oleanders, and when you walk around on the streets, you will see well maintained houses, imposing cliffs and picturesque alleys.

The residents of Menetes organize religious festivals in August to celebrate Virgin Mary, when families come together and join to the feast from all parts of Karpathos island.

The village has some taverns and restaurants, such as Taverna Perdika Κωστάκης, Manolis taverna or Koula’s Bakery.

In the area there were built many interesting churches and chapels, which are listed among the best sights in Menetes. The most famous of these are the Church of the Assumption (Kimissis tis Theotokou, or Παναγία Κοιμησεως Θεοτόκου in Greek), the Byzantine Church of Agios Mamas (Άγιος Μάμας), the Church of St. Spiridon, and Profitis Ilias (Προφήτης Ηλίας) on the hill above. The largest of these is Church of the Assumption (Kimissis tis Theotokou), which offers a great lookout point from its garden.

A small private folklore Museum opens its doors sometimes in Menetes also, with an interesting collection from the past of Karpathos and Greece. Visitors can see traditional musical instruments which were made by wood, utensils, laces, photographs, carpets and other curiosities from the past. The museum is located next by the free parking lot in the center of the village.
Between Menetes village and Pigadia there is an important monument of the area, which commemorates the heroes of World War II. The War Memorial of Menetes – or ‘Μνημείο 5ης Οκτωβρίου’ as locals call it often – symbolizes the Revolution of Karpathos during the World War II against German and Italian invaders. The monument commemorates the war heroes and their brave resistance, it was built directly next to the main road between Menetes and Pigadia. This is one of the most interesting parts of Karpathos, due to its picturesque hairpin bends.
