Michaliou Kipos beach

Michaliou Kipos beach is one of the nearest beaches to Karpathos Airport, located directly on the west side of the airport. This area offer some nice bays and beaches with emerald waters for the visitors, and Michaliou Kipos beach (Paralia Michaliou Kipos, or Παραλία Μιχαλιού in Greek) is one of the best among these.

Where to find Michalou Kipos beach

Michaliou Kipos beach is located 16 kilometers in the south from Pigadia, and just a few hundred meters from the airport of Karpathos. The way is almost the same as going to Diakoftis beach, but the access of Michaliou Kipos is simpler, because it is located where the dirt road starts to Diakoftis. The other access of Michaliou Kipos beach is a narrow dirt road, which is turns off the asphalted road after you leaved the junction of Diakoftis.

Beside each other there are 3-4 small bays, where the mother nature formed tiny beaches with emerald waters. The nearest to the airport is known as Psoraris beach, and the second is the real Michaliou Kipos beach.

Michaliou Kipos beach (Paralia Michaliou Kipos, Παραλία Μιχαλιού) very small bay with fine golden sand, coarse sand and pebbles, where the sea has emerald and turquoise colored waters. Its seabed is quite shallow – don’t expect a lagoon of Diakoftis, but suitable for everyone, who can’t swim well.

This beach is a great place for those who don’t like crowded places, and want to be a little bit secluded. Michaliou Kipos beach became organized recent years, during high season period there can be find some parasols for rent, and sometimes a small cantina in the area. This beach is located in the southern side of Karpathos island which is usually windy, and the cliffs behind cannot always provide enough protection from the winds.

In the sea there are some sharp rocks, so you should pay attention when step into waters. One of the most interesting things about Michaliou Kipos beach are its sandstone walls, where small shells can be seen. These fossilized shells are a few million years old, when this entire area was part of the Aegean sea.

In the area of the airport of Karpathos you can find several tiny beaches and small secluded bays. Some of these beaches is are in the direction of the famous Diakoftis beach, while the other are located in the west from the aiport. Near to Michaliou Kipos beach, about 2 kilometers away you can find the best kitesurf spot of Karpathos island, known as Agrilaopotamos beach.
